受疫情影響，自3月16日起，大紐約地區學校陸續關閉，孩子們在家，除了上網課外，各種活動受到限制。如何幫助孩子們度過這個非常時期的枯燥生活，讓家長們十分操心。惠言先生在徵得參與創作者和組織者同意後，主動向我們編輯部提議，把他正在籌划出版的《惠言童話》18篇繪畫本稿子贈給我們網站連載，可以讓孩子們在網上看到和聽到這些故事，有助於提高他們的中文閱讀和聽力水平。
故事文稿是基於惠言先生前幾年在《世界日報》上發表的故事修改的，中美兩地34個孩子們參加了插畫稿創作，上海五里橋文化中心張煒瑋主任組織「音之魅」誦讀沙龍的語言藝術家們創作了9個朗誦作品。希望這些生動有趣的故事、童趣洋溢的圖畫和美妙的朗誦藝術作品，能伴隨孩子們度過新冠疫情這個困難時期。對此，我們向惠言先生；英文稿的校閱者Jason Kenny先生和趙蒙皓女士；上海五里橋文化中心及「音之魅」誦讀沙龍語言藝術家們；參與畫稿創作的孩子們及其家長表示衷心感謝！

很久很久以前的村莊里，有個農夫養了只大公雞。公雞非常漂亮，有鮮紅的雞冠、油光的脖子跟彩色的尾巴。公雞也十分勤快，每天天沒亮，就跳到院子的土牆上，撲扇著翅膀、伸伸脖子大聲歌唱。唱完一遍，休息一會再唱，公雞為自己嘹亮的歌聲自豪。
A long time ago in a village, lived a farmer and his big rooster. It was a beautiful rooster with a bright red cockscomb, a shiny neck and a colorful tail. The rooster was very diligent. Every day before dawn, he would jump onto the dirt wall by the court yard, flapping his wings, stretching his neck and singing loudly. After singing, he would take a break and then sing again. The rooster was very proud of his loud voice.
雞叫頭遍，農夫就起床，準備乾糧。雞叫三遍，天空放白，全村的農夫都帶上乾糧，扛起農具，牽著牛下地幹活去了，一直到太陽落山才回家。
When the rooster crowed for the first time in the morning, the farmer would get up and prepare lunch. After the rooster crowed three times, the sky turned bright. All farmers in the village brought their lunch boxes, carried farm tools and led cattle to work in the field until the sun went down.
有一天，公雞剛叫了第一遍，牆腳下爬來一隻烏龜。烏龜對著公雞喊：「別叫了！天沒亮就把人吵醒。」公雞疑惑地問：「天馬上亮了，把你叫醒不正好嗎？」烏龜沒帶好氣地說：「誰要你叫醒？自作多情！我正做好夢呢，被你刺耳的聲音吵醒。天亮了，我自然會醒，明天別叫了。」 烏龜的話深深地刺傷了公雞的自尊。
One day, just after the rooster crowed for the first time, a turtle crawled under the wall. The turtle shouted at the rooster, “Stop crowing! You always wake me up before the sun comes out.” The rooster asked, “Daylight is coming out soon, isn』t it just about time to wake you up?” “Who asked you to wake them up?” the turtle grumbled. 「You are flattering yourself! I was having a good dream and was awakened by your harsh voice. I prefer waking up naturally at daybreak. Don’t crow tomorrow.” The turtle’s words hurt the rooster ‘s self-esteem deeply.
第二天，公雞雖然同往常那樣起身，卻沒跳上土牆啼叫。這天，很多農夫比平時晚起，天已大亮，有些人連乾糧也沒準備，匆匆忙忙地下地幹活。烏龜白天遇到公雞，笑眯眯地說：「今天自然醒，真舒服！」 公雞沒吱聲。
The next day, although the rooster got up as usual, he did not jump on the earth wall to crow. On that day, many farmers got up later than usual. When the sun was up so many farmers had to rush to the field with no time to prepare lunch. The turtle ran into the rooster during the day. He smiled and said, “It’s very pleasant to wake up naturally today!” The rooster didn』t say a word.
一連三天，公雞都沒有叫 ，村裡的日常生活亂了套。農夫以為公雞病了，收工後到雞窩來看望公雞，關心地問：「有三天沒有聽到你叫，病了嗎？」公雞傷心地說：「我沒病，烏龜不喜歡我清晨歌唱，煩我把他吵醒。」
For three days, the rooster didn』t crow. The village』s daily routine was in disarray. The farmer was worried that the rooster might be sick. After finishing work, he came to check on the rooster. He asked with concern, “I did not hear you crow for three days, are you sick?” “I’m not sick. The turtle is annoyed that my singing wake him up in the morning ” the rooster replied sadly.
農夫聽完，哈哈大笑著說：「嘿，烏龜是個懶惰蟲，又是幸運兒。他有啥吃啥，不幹活也餓不著，別聽他的。我們農民最怕耽誤農時，如果不能在春季及時播種，秋天就沒有收成，大家都得凍死餓死，我需要你唱歌把我叫醒。」
The farmer laughed after hearing that, “What! That turtle is lazy and lucky. Don’t listen to him. He eats anything that he can find so that he doesn』t need to work and never goes hungry. We farmers are most afraid of delaying farming time. If we can’t plant the seeds in time during the spring, there will be no harvest in the fall. Everyone will freeze and starve to death. I need you to wake me up in the morning. ”
公雞聽完農夫的話，知道自己的歌聲那麼有用，高興得不得了。第二天早早跳上土牆再次高歌。
The rooster was delighted to hear the farmer』s words. He now knew his crowing played an important role. The next morning, he jumped onto the dirt wall and sang again.
烏龜又來抱怨，公雞抱歉地說：「不好意思吵醒你，好在你不愁吃喝，白天打瞌睡吧！農夫需要我把他們叫醒，他們要抓緊時間勞動，才能生存啊！」
The turtle came to complain again, but the rooster replied, “I’m sorry to wake you up, but you don’t need to worry about working to get your food. You can doze off during the day! Farmers need me to wake them up. They have to work hard to survive!”
此後，公雞恪盡職守，每天凌晨歌唱三遍。村民們聞雞起身，日出而作，日落而息，過著豐衣足食的農家生活。
After that, the rooster did his duty and sang three times a day in the early morning. The villagers got up upon the crow of the rooster, began to work at sunrise, and returned home at sunset. They lived a peaceful farm life with ample food and clothing.

作者簡介
惠言（實名：諸惠昌）
退休水處理專業工程師，退休後撰寫《惠言童話故事》和生活雜記。1946年生於中國浙江省慈溪市，1950年後在上海完成小學和中學。1968年9月畢業於北京清華大學土建系給排水專業。1994年3月在美國猶他州立大學獲土木和環境工程碩士學位。長期從事水處理領域科學研究、工程設計和項目管理。
趙蒙皓
資深跨國教育及文化諮詢師。曾在紐約市舉世聞名的K-12年制道爾頓學校(The Dalton School)任教多年，並曾任美國名校紐約大學（NYU）的客座教授。上海外國語學院，對外漢語系肄業；美國明德大學（Middlebury College），經濟學及日本文學文學雙學士；美國馬里蘭大學商學院（University of Maryland）工商管理碩士。
劉子祺
男，14歲，就讀於滄州市青縣第二中學初中二年級，喜歡畫畫和閱讀。參加過一些比賽獲得過一些小成績； 2015年8月，作品《未來移動城堡》榮獲滄州市第十三屆青少年科技創新大賽 三等獎；2015年12月，作品榮獲青縣第七屆「小洋人」杯童心逐夢繪畫比賽優秀獎。
馬捷凱
男，11歲，就讀於浙江省慈溪市橋頭中心小學五年級。參加各種繪畫比賽： 2016年4月獲校內第二屆科技節科幻畫三等獎，2016年9月獲第十六屆PHE國際青少年書畫大賽三等獎，2016年獲慈溪少兒創意美術繪畫大賽鄉鎮低段二等獎，2017年獲第十七屆PHE國際青少年書畫大賽三等獎。繪畫指導：「我繪藝術教育」邵玲老師。
