It was an early summer night. A cicada quietly climbed out of the earth under the moonlight. He had been living in the soil under the roots of the old poplar tree for many years. He slowly climbed up the tree trunk, inch by inch, and finally climbed to the top of the tree. Then he used his forepaws to pierce the bark, gradually expanding his body. Thus his shell cracked from the back.
The cicada climbed out of the shell, hung upside down from it, and slowly unfolded his wings. Just then, he felt an itch on his calf. He looked at it carefully, and found that an ant was brushing his leg with its tentacles.
The ant had been watching the cicada shedding. The cicada was most afraid of being disturbed when stretching his soft wings because it could possibly injure his wings. The cicada saw that the ant was disturbing him. He flexed his leg angrily, and kicked the ant down the tree.
At dawn, the sun came out. The sky was cloudless; the burning sun was shining on the lush green of the canopy. As the temperature rose sharply, the male cicada’s body matured and his wings hardened.
The cicada sucked sweet tree sap out of the green tender branches. He vibrated his castanets on his belly, making a loud and rhythmic song, “Gi, Gi, Gi.” He sang songs to attract the female cicada, who does not sing. His song was also a loud weather forecast: it would be a hot day.
Suddenly, the cicada saw a large group of ants. The ants came out of a cave near the roots of the tree, and formed a neat long line. This time, it was the cicada’s turn to watch the ants. He stopped singing and looked at the ant army, curious what they intended to do.
The cicada saw that the leader of the ants had an injured foot. It was the ant he had kicked down the tree. Actually, that ant was a “scout” who was looking for food, he suffered a minor injury. The injured ant returned home, and convened the mighty ant army.
When the ants reached the peeled cicada shell, they changed the formation and surrounded the shell. Each ant bit different parts of the shell to make it easier to drag. Because the cicada shell’s forepaws were buried deep in the bark, the ants could not drag the whole shell. They began to chew it instead.
The cicada realized that the ants were trying to crush his peeled shell into fragments, and then move those small pieces to their home. He felt that although the shell was useless, it was still, after all, his used “coat”. He could not let the ants crush it in front of him. He turned his back on the ants, and peed. All of the ants surrounding the shell were washed down the tree. Then the cicada flapped his wings, sang a loud “Gi—-,” and flew happily away.
