受疫情影響，自3月16日起，大紐約地區學校陸續關閉，孩子們在家，除了上網課外，各種活動受到限制。如何幫助孩子們度過這個非常時期的枯燥生活，讓家長們十分操心。惠言先生在徵得參與創作者和組織者同意後，主動向我們編輯部提議，把他正在籌划出版的《惠言童話》18篇繪畫本稿子贈給我們網站連載，可以讓孩子們在網上看到和聽到這些故事，有助於提高他們的中文閱讀和聽力水平。
故事文稿是基於惠言先生前幾年在《世界日報》上發表的故事修改的，中美兩地34個孩子們參加了插畫稿創作，上海五里橋文化中心張煒瑋主任組織「音之魅」誦讀沙龍的語言藝術家們創作了9個朗誦作品。希望這些生動有趣的故事、童趣洋溢的圖畫和美妙的朗誦藝術作品，能伴隨孩子們度過新冠疫情這個困難時期。對此，我們向惠言先生；英文稿的校閱者Jason Kenny先生和趙蒙皓女士；上海五里橋文化中心及「音之魅」誦讀沙龍語言藝術家們；參與畫稿創作的孩子們及其家長表示衷心感謝！

清晨，天矇曚亮，湖區薄霧繚繞，花瓣和草尖上沾滿晶瑩的露珠。一隻烏龜在湖邊的碎石小路上奮力爬行，一頭狗熊到湖邊喝水，不小心踩到烏龜磕了腳，氣呼呼地一腳把烏龜踢進湖裡。
Early one morning under a bright dawn sky by a mist-shrouded lake sat a turtle. Glittering and translucent dewdrops hung on petals and green grass tips. The turtle crawled slowly on the gravel path near the lakeshore. A bear stopped by the lake for a drink. He accidentally stepped on the turtle and twisted his ankle. Frustrated, he kicked the turtle into the lake.
烏龜落水時發出聲響、濺起水花，驚動了湖中的鱸魚。鱸魚游來，看見是烏龜，就說：「老兄，嚇我一跳，一大早爬上岸幹什麼去了？」烏龜回答：「練跑步呀。」鱸魚說：「你爬得那麼慢，還練什麼跑步？」
The turtle flew into the water with a big splash. The loud noise stirred the bass from his resting space in the lake. The bass swam on and saw the turtle. He said, “You frightened me. What are you doing on the lakeshore so early in the morning?” The turtle replied, “Morning exercise and running practice.” The bass wondered, “You even climb slowly. Why do you need practice running?”
烏龜傲慢地反駁：「我跑得可不慢。你不知道嗎？上次與兔子賽跑，把兔子比下去了，得了冠軍。從那以後，我天天練跑步，準備衛冕冠軍。」鱸魚聽後，故意大吃一驚：「你吹牛吧！兔子跑得那麼快，老鷹都不一定抓住他，你怎麼能贏兔子？」
The turtle haughtily retorted, “My running is not slow. Don\’t you know? Last time I raced with the rabbit, I beat him and won the championship. From then on, I』ve practiced running every day and am ready for my next championship win.” The bass feigned his surprise, “You brag! A rabbit can run so fast that even an eagle is not guaranteed to catch him. How could you have beaten the rabbit?”
烏龜諷刺鱸魚：「人常說井底青蛙，沒見過世面，看來你老弟雖然住在寬廣的水體里，知識面也不過如此。」鱸魚聽到烏龜的嘲笑，感到烏龜過於自大，有必要教訓他一下，就對烏龜說：「既然你在陸上跑得快，能贏兔子，你敢和我比游泳嗎？」
The turtle satirized the bass, “People often say that the frog that lived in the bottom of the well had never seen the world. You yourself live in the wide water, but it seems that your knowledge is also limited to what you see in the water, and do not know the comings and goings elsewhere.” The bass sensed the turtle』s satire. He thought the turtle was arrogant and decided to teach him a lesson. He challenged the turtle, “Since you run fast on land and can beat the rabbit, I challenge you to have a swimming race with me.”
烏龜不假思索地應戰：「當然可以，我已經是跑步冠軍，我游泳比跑步快得多，一定能贏得游泳冠軍，那可就是雙料冠軍了。」
Turtle replied without hesitation, “Of course. I』ve won the running championship and I swim much faster than I run. I can certainly win the swimming race. Then I will become a double champion」.
雙方商定以誰先游到湖對岸為勝。魚、蝦、青蛙、野鴨、天鵝等聞訊，紛紛趕來觀賽。出發後，鱸魚不敢懈怠，划動雙鰭、快速擺尾，領先游去。
The two sides agreed to the rules — whoever swam first across the lake to the other side would be the winner. Fish, shrimp, frogs, ducks, swans and all the local animals heard the news and gathered to watch the race. After the start, the bass tried his best. He quickly swung his double fins and tail to propel his swim.
烏龜擺動四肢，拚命追趕。儘管烏龜的粉絲青蛙們尾隨烏龜，為他加油，鱸魚依然遙遙領先到達對岸。
The turtle flapped his limbs with all his might but moved slowly with little effect. Despite cheers from turtle』s fans including the frog, the bass was still far ahead and reached the other side first.
鱸魚對粉絲簇擁下趕到的烏龜笑著說：「如何，認輸吧！現代通訊發達，你和兔子賽跑的事，外星人都知道，我怎會不知道？你得冠軍是因為兔子驕傲了，半途睡覺誤了事。大家讚揚你，是因為你雖然跑得慢，但是你有堅持到底的毅力。」
When the turtle finally arrived on the other side, the bass said with a smile to the turtle, surrounded by all the fans, “Well, I won! Everyone knows you raced with the rabbit, how could I not? You won the running championship because the rabbit was too arrogant. He messed it up by sleeping through half the race. We praised you even though you ran slowly because you were able to stay the course and persevere.”
觀眾聽了都高聲贊同：「鱸魚說得對！」烏龜羞愧地低頭說：「看來我讓那場勝利沖昏了頭，不知天高地厚了。」烏龜從此做事更踏實，再也不自誇比兔子跑得快了。
All the audience loudly agreed, “Yes, the bass is right!” The turtle bowed his head in shame, “It seems that I got carried away by the victory and have forgotten who I am.” Since then, the turtle worked with more focus and remained steadfast. He never again boasted that he could run faster than the rabbit.

作者簡介
惠言（實名：諸惠昌）
退休水處理專業工程師，退休後撰寫《惠言童話故事》和生活雜記。1946年生於中國浙江省慈溪市，1950年後在上海完成小學和中學。1968年9月畢業於北京清華大學土建系給排水專業。1994年3月在美國猶他州立大學獲土木和環境工程碩士學位。長期從事水處理領域科學研究、工程設計和項目管理。
趙蒙皓
資深跨國教育及文化諮詢師。曾在紐約市舉世聞名的K-12年制道爾頓學校(The Dalton School)任教多年，並曾任美國名校紐約大學（NYU）的客座教授。上海外國語學院，對外漢語系肄業；美國明德大學（Middlebury College），經濟學及日本文學文學雙學士；美國馬里蘭大學商學院（University of Maryland）工商管理碩士。
虞梓軒
虞梓軒，男，時年10歲，就讀慈溪市慈吉小學五年級11班。從5歲開始學習畫畫。2016年在第十六屆PHE國際青少年書畫大賽中憑藉作品《戲裡戲外》榮獲一等獎並去北京政協禮堂現場領獎；2017年在第十七屆PHE國際青少年書畫大賽中憑藉作品《鳴鶴古鎮》榮獲二等獎，同年在全市萬人創意大賽中兩次榮獲二等獎。
虞躍
虞躍，男，時年12歲，居中國杭州市，觀城中學初一學生。健康陽光，興趣廣泛，喜歡短跑、籃球、游泳、畫畫、行進鼓。曾參加慈善義賣活動和各類賽事。作品《西風吹，蟲兒飛》曾榮獲「童眼看絲路」國際少兒美術大賽優勝獎。
張譽曦
英文名：Yuxi Zhang，今年10歲，就讀於Livingstone Ave小學。性格開朗，喜歡運動和畫畫。
